Dorothy Marie Morrison

Dorothy Marie Morrison, lovingly known as Marie, 76, of Flatwoods, KY, passed away on August 28, 2026, at the Ashland Community Care Center, surrounded by her family, leaving behind a beautiful legacy of faith, family, hard work, generosity, and a lifetime spent caring for others.

Born June 21, 1950, Marie was born on June 21, 1950, in Ashland, KY, to the late Charity Rose Gentry Workman and Albert “Pete” McDowell. She was the baby of a large family, with siblings James M. Workman, William J. Workman, Rexal E. Workman, Joseph F. Workman, Andrew J. Workman, Alice F. Smith, Bessie R. Chaffin, Pearl M. Workman, and Ruby J. Workman, who, like her parents, also preceded her in death.

Marie met the love of her life, Estil E. Morrison “Gene”, at the young age of sixteen, and they married when she was seventeen. Their love endured throughout their life together. When Gene passed away in 2010, Marie missed him deeply, and her family takes comfort in knowing that after sixteen years apart, they are together again.

A hard worker from a very young age, Marie spent much of her life doing what she did best, taking care of people. Throughout the years, she worked at the Bluegrass Grill, the Ashland Oil Refinery Cafeteria, Druther’s/Dairy Queen, and on a catering truck for Fast Eddie. She later became a longtime cook for Pathways on 22nd Street in Ashland and retired from the Pathways Crisis Unit kitchen at the remarkable age of 75.

Marie was well known for her natural talent in the kitchen. Cooking was more than something she was good at; it was one of the many ways she showed her love. Her recipes were divine, her meals were memorable, and no one ever went hungry when Marie was around. Whether feeding her family, friends, coworkers, or someone who simply needed a meal, she found great joy in making others happy through the food she prepared.

She had the heart of a true servant. Marie was compassionate, generous, and always willing to help someone in need. She was the kind of woman who would give you her last penny without hesitation.

Her strong Christian faith was the foundation of her life. Her love for Jesus began remarkably early. At just five years old, Marie took herself to church, beginning a devotion to God that would remain with her throughout her life. She lived her faith not only through words, but through the way she loved, served, gave, forgave, and cared for others. She attended Emmanuel Baptist Church in Louisa, KY.

Marie was also creative and loved working with her hands. She enjoyed crocheting, painting, working puzzles, diamond art, singing, going to the movies, and shopping. She especially loved Mickey Mouse and was absolutely elated when her family surprised her with a trip to Disney, where she finally had the opportunity to meet her favorite character.

Above everything else, Marie loved her family.

She was the very definition of a Mama Bear—fiercely protective of her cubs and unwavering in her love for them. She raised her daughters to become strong, independent women while teaching them through her own example to care for others, work hard, stand strong through adversity, and give without hesitation.

Marie is survived by her three daughters, Angela M. Chevalier of Westwood, KY, Virginia G. Moore “Ginny” and her husband, Robert of Largo, FL, and Kimberly Sue Ann Lykins and her husband, John “J.P.” of Flatwoods, KY; grandchildren: Jacob P. E. Lykins, Ashleigh R. Sparks, Zachary A. Hood, and Shelbie M. Hood, as well as her bonus grandchildren, Desire’ N. Patrick “Nikki” and Megan R. Clark. Her family continued to grow with three great-grandchildren and five bonus great-grandchildren, each adding another chapter to the family she loved so deeply.

Marie leaves behind much more than memories. She leaves her family the values she lived every day: love God, love your family, work hard, help those who need you, give what you can, and never be afraid to love big.

Marie was strong, courageous, resilient, compassionate, and giving. She worked hard her entire life. She loved without reservation and protected those she loved fiercely. She fed countless people, helped whenever she saw a need, and spent her life quietly demonstrating what it means to serve others.

You simply could not cross Marie’s path without seeing the light that shone within her.

Her hands have finished their work. Her family has been well loved. Her faith has carried her Home.

A funeral service will be at noon on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Bailey Family Funeral Home in Flatwoods, KY, with Pastor Jonathan Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Rosehill Burial Park in Ashland, KY.

Visitation will be held from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, and for one hour before the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Marie’s honor to the Ashland Community Hospice Care Center (2330 Pollard Rd, Ashland, KY 41101).
