James “J.P.” Bailey, of Flatwoods, KY, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at Trinity Station Retirement Community
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Thelma Caudill Bailey, and his brother, Michael Bailey. He is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 55 years, Nancy Nigra Bailey of Flatwoods; his son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Jodi Bailey of Flatwoods; and his two beloved grandsons, Preston and Peyton Bailey, who were the pride of his life. He is also survived by his sister, Sheila Oborne Deborde, and husband William of Flatwoods; two brothers, Dwight Bailey and wife Cathy of Flatwoods, and Mark Bailey and wife Alexis of Norfolk, VA and sister-in-law Joyce A. Bailey of South Charleston, OH; several loving nieces and nephews; and many extended family members and dear friends.
J.P. and Nancy were high school sweethearts who married in September of 1970, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with hard work, faith, and dedication to family and community. Together, they developed neighborhoods, built homes, and launched businesses that shaped the Flatwoods and Russell areas for generations. Their ventures included Advance Family Health Care (founded in 1986 as the region’s first walk-in urgent care, later sold to Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital), Trinity Station Retirement Community (opened in 2001 as the area’s first and only locally owned Continuing Care Retirement Community), and Bailey Family Funeral Home (established in 2011 to serve families with care and compassion during their most difficult times).
A licensed nursing home administrator, J.P. earned his bachelor’s degree in business from Marshall University in Huntington, WV. He was also a licensed real estate broker in the States of Kentucky and Florida. He was also a licensed real estate appraiser, mortgage broker, and pest control manager & operator in the State of Kentucky. Professionally, he spent over 40 years as a building contractor, proudly carrying on the Bailey family legacy as one of the “Baileys that built Flatwoods.” A third-generation builder and developer, J.P.’s work can be seen across the community—from commercial buildings to countless homes—built by himself, his father Howard, or one of his uncles, Clarence, Jack, Homer, Paul, and Harry Jr.
Faith was the cornerstone of J.P.’s life. He served as a Deacon, board member, and Sunday school superintendent at Faith Christian Assembly Church in Flatwoods, where his leadership and commitment to service touched many lives.
J.P. will be remembered for his vision, his work ethic, and his deep love for his family and community. His impact is etched not only in the streets and buildings of Flatwoods, but in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
A funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Faith Christian Assembly (1500 Argillite Rd, Flatwoods, KY 41139) with Rev. Brent Bailey, Pastor Dwight Bailey, and Rev. Mark Bailey officiating. Burial will follow at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Russell, KY.
Visitation will be held from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Bailey Family Funeral Home in Flatwoods, KY, and one hour before the service on Thursday, at the church.
